Transmission and Prevention

 

How someone can become infected with HIV:

  • By having sexual intercourse with someone who is infected with the virus.
  • By injecting drugs using a needle or syringe which has already been used by someone who is infected.
         -Small amount of blood can remain on the needle or syringe. The remaining blood can enter the next users body.
  • Or an infected mother with the virus can pass it along to her unborn child.
         
    -An infected mother can pass along the virus during pregnancy or during birth.
  • HIV can also be passed along to a child by breast-feeding.
          -The fluid in a mother's milk has the virus in it and if a mother is breast-feeding it can be passed along to her child.

 

Preventing HIV/AIDS:

  1. Safe sex.
         - If you are having sex, use a latex condom.

         - The only 100% sure way to prevent HIV is Abstinence.

  2. Safe Blood
         - Never share needles or syringes
         - If you need blood, make sure it has been screened and approved.

  3. Safe Motherhood
         - Make sure you are HIV/AIDS free, get tested.
