Jackson was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1992 for his pioneering work in Natural Systems Agriculture and named by Smithsonian Magazine in 2005 as one of 35 people who have made a difference. In describing his work in 2007, the editors of Scientific American said, "The challenge is monumental, but if these plant scientists succeed, their achievement would rival humanity’s original domestication of food crops over the past 10 millennia, and be just as revolutionary." Clarkson awarded Jackson an honorary degree in 1999 for "his international leadership in developing the principles of ecological agriculture, and for his imaginative and exemplary work as a humanistic visionary in a technological field."

Joyful Ignorance and the Civic Mind

Prof. Bill Vitek’s lecture “Joyful Ignorance and the Civic Mind” is an essay from his book "The Virtues of Ignorance: Sustainability, Complexity, and the Limits of Knowledge," co-edited with Wes Jackson and forthcoming this spring with the University Press of Kentucky. The talk begins with a linguistic analysis of “knowledge” and “ignorance,” and settles on the phrase “joyful ignorance” to describe the state or activity of choosing to ignore the obvious; i.e., ignoring what can easily or myopically be known. Joyful ignorance, Vitek claims, is a willful, defiant, rebellious act in the face of the obvious, of certainty, of security and control, and of domination. He uses the work of forester and philosopher Aldo Leopold to describe what he calls a more civic way of knowing, or the “civic mind,” and ends with some suggestions for educators and policy makers interested in promoting it.
